Step 1: Know your roof load capacity before you start
Before placing anything on the roof, you need to know the maximum roof load capacity of your van. You'll find this in the owner's manual or on the vehicle identification plate.
The roof load is a total weight, that includes the weight of the roof rack itself. If your Ford Transit has a roof load rating of 150 kg and your rack weighs 30 kg, you can only load a maximum of 120 kg of materials.
⚠️ Never exceed the roof load limit. Doing so increases braking distance, worsens road stability and can cause serious bodywork damage.
Step 2: Distribute the weight evenly
This is the step most tradespeople skip, and the one that causes the most problems. Loading all your cargo on one side of the van roof rack creates a genuinely dangerous situation.
Why is uneven loading dangerous?
A van is designed to drive stably when weight is distributed evenly. As soon as you pile everything to one side, there are direct consequences:
- The van leans more in corners than normal → dangerous for you and other road users
- Greater risk of bodywork damage on the overloaded side → the rack and mounting points are under constant uneven stress
- In a sudden swerve or emergency stop, the van reacts less predictably
How do you distribute weight correctly?
Think of it like a set of scales: not everything on one side (left or right), and not everything stacked front or back. Got a long van roof rack? Use the full length. Spread ladders, pipes and sheets across the full length and width, rather than piling everything in one spot. It's easy to rush in the morning, but that's exactly when poor loading causes problems on the road.
💡 On a Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter or Volkswagen Crafter with a long van roof rack, you have more load length available. Use that space deliberately and alternate heavy and light cargo along the length of the rack.
Step 3: Always secure the load properly
A correctly distributed load that isn't fastened down is still dangerous. Always use securing equipment suited to your type of cargo:
- Straps: ideal for beams or long profiles
- Ladder clamps: specifically designed to secure ladders front and rear on the roof rack

Step 4: Comply with legal requirements
In Belgium, clear rules apply to roof loads on vans. Failing to follow them risks not just a fine, but also danger to yourself and others:
- Cargo must not protrude beyond the front of the vehicle
- At the rear, cargo may protrude a maximum of 1m
- Cargo may protrude a maximum of 20cm on each side (total width max. 2.55m)
- The vehicle including load must not exceed 4m in height
- If the rear overhang exceeds 1 m, a red-and-white marker board is mandatory
- Night transport with overhanging load: red rear light + orange side reflectors required

- It is forbidden to load your vehicle higher than 4 meters or wider than 2.55 meters.
- If your vehicle itself is 2.6 meters wide, that is the maximum.
